Community Initiatives

The AMA (WA) advocates on a range of health issues affecting a community of 2.5 million patients across Western Australia

Patient care and public health are high priorities for the Australian Medical Association (WA), which campaigns tirelessly for the rights of patients, better public health services, guaranteed freedom of choice in the private system and the right to retain access to Australia’s high standards of medicine.

Recognising a gap in programs designed to specifically address the needs of youth in Western Australia, the AMA (WA) Foundation was established in 1996, and subsequently developed two innovative and award-winning initiatives – Dr YES (Youth Education Sessions) and the Youth Friendly Doctor training program. Both tackle a range of health issues that affect young Western Australians, including sexual health, mental health, and alcohol and other drugs.

The AMA (WA) Foundation continues to exist as a not-for-profit organisation through donations, external funding and the support of the AMA (WA). If you would like to be involved in the Foundation’s efforts by making a donation to the youth program, please complete the online donation form. If you would like to discuss current or future donations that will help achieve your financial and estate plans, please contact Simone Wilson at the AMA (WA) on (08) 9273 3000 or email

The AMA (WA) provides programs designed to specifically address the needs of youth in Western Australia.

Health Training Australia is an AMA (WA) sponsored group training organisation, which offers entry-level employment and training to those seeking work in the role of a care worker via a traineeship pathway. Trainees in aged care, home care, mental health and disability have the opportunity to develop their skills and receive a nationally recognised Certificate IV qualification.

For doctors, the AMA (WA) provides a range of professional development programs, including CPR training which is available to members at no charge. A comprehensive First Aid and CPR program is provided for practice staff and the general community at competitive rates.

Youth Services Directory

To assist WA's Youth Friendly Doctors, the AMA (WA) Foundation has developed a Youth Services Directory that enables doctors and service providers to quickly locate youth services throughout WA. Please note, some services may require a referral.
